Mainspring tension screw Winchester 1873 and 1876

This tension screw sits in the lower tang of the Winchester model 1873 and 1876. On the 1873 model, it sits right in front of the mainspring screw. It is in the same location on the 76 but keep in mind 76 does not utilize a mainspring screw. Your mainspring/ hammer spring (mainspring) can weekForearm over time this screw was Winchesters answer to that problem. When it is tightened it pushes up on the bottom of the mainspring giving it more tension and making it stronger.
