This is AN ORIGINAL carrier spring Winchester model 1886. It is located on the underside of the upper tang and put pressure on the carrier to hold it up as the finger lever is lowered. when you pull the finger lever past a certain point the carrier spring releases pressure on the carrier and allows it to drop into the position to receive a new cartridge from the mag.
